If you're told that you have to restart the computer after the installation, make sure to close out the wizard with either Finish or Cancel before rebooting, as shown in Figure C. The command line option is useful in situations when you're unable to use Control Panel to install new software.
A good example of this is software installation from a Web site where there is no direct executable. With applications ready to go, you need to make sure your users can actually access them.
Add the users to the Remote Desktop Users group to accomplish this. Alternatively, for systems that are not domain controllers, you can use the Select Remote Users button on the Remote tab in System Properties. For domain controllers, this button is disabled, so you must use one of the other methods.
And now, for the real test: Does it work? To make this determination, you need to connect to the Terminal Services server. When you connect to a Terminal Services server, you can use just a single application, or you can provide the user with a full desktop based on Windows Server from which they can launch applications just as they normally would.
This is the way that the Remote Desktop For Administration function works in Windows Server and is well documented. For this example, I will show you how to launch one of your newly installed applications. You will get a window that asks for the name of the machine to which you would like to connect.
If you provide a machine name, the client will connect to that machine and prompt you for login credentials, after which you'll get a desktop, unless the administrator has created a different profile for you.
Click the Options button to expand this window beyond just the server name. You'll see five tabs:. The General tab, shown in Figure D , lets you provide the Terminal Services server name along with an appropriate user name, password, and domain.
You can also opt to save the password so you are automatically connected to the Terminal Services server. Use the Display tab, shown in Figure E , to determine the resolution and number of colors that will be used for the connection. The more colors you use and the bigger the screen, the more data that has to be sent over the network. In Windows Terminal services became just another program to install through add or remove software. These early terminal servers had two modes, Application and Remote Administration.
The situation in Server is that Remote Administration mode becomes Remote Desktop and is installed automatically on each Server Application is mode is the what the dozens of clients need to run their Remote Desktop session. Application mode is what you install through Add or Remove programs.
With the arrival of Windows Server many of the previous Terminal Service niggles have been ironed out. For instance, we now have true color, rather than being limited to resolution. Local resources like files and com ports have been added to local printers.
So that you benefits from all the server resources as well as having the local resources available when wanted. Another improvement in Windows is a more efficient network connection, quite frankly, I have never found the network bandwidth to be a problem with Terminal Services, the bottleneck is more often memory on the server.
If I have one tiny criticism of Terminal Service it is that you need to check three different interfaces to configure the settings, Licensing, Configuration and Server Manager. You can add Terminal Services in Remote Administration mode at any time, but we recommend that you install Terminal Services when you build the server.
Application Server mode is designed for serving end-user programs. If you choose Application Server mode, Terminal Services enables additional objects that are required to manage multiple users running the same programs at the same time. It affects the performance of BackOffice programs or services. There are no connection limitations. However, you must purchase licenses and run the Terminal Services Licensing service to connect to a Terminal Services server.
If you are supporting a large number of users in Application Server mode, we recommend that the server is a dedicated Terminal Server that does not perform any additional tasks. Although other services can run at the same time, overall system performance may be affected.
After you choose your mode of operation, changing or disabling the Terminal Services mode may cause programs not to work as expected. When this problem occurs, you must reinstall the programs.
If you choose to install Terminal Services in Remote Administration mode, no special program installation or configuration work is necessary. If you choose to install Terminal Services in Application Server mode, installing programs is a little different.
